Resident Evil director Zach Cregger says he's cut most of movie's jokes, after test audiences apparently found the film "too funny." https://bit.ly/4yoUNVW

This is like that mini making of documentary of george lucas making episode one and saying how they’ve never had a character as “funny” as jar jar

I had no interest in this film anyway but jesus Cregger seems screwed from the start. Constant inteference from obnoxious fans and ignorant studio execs is going to make this a waste of time. Hope he goes back to making non-franchise fare after this.

I really don't think people are bothering to read it beyond the headline. He is happy with the cut, trimming it down. Not getting rid of all the jokes, just making it tighter. This happens with all movies. I wouldn't read that much into it.

RE's movie output needs to win over audiences and even though RE is full of camp, its still survival horror and not comedy horror. Whats ironic is that the Netflix show actually tried that comedy tone from the games and people hated it! Lol Dont try to please anyone, just make something good.

Counterpoint: "Survival Horror" is a fake term we (GenX gamers/journos) made up to describe "M-rated games where we hadn't figured out how 3D controls should work yet" and doesn't really MEAN anything. Trying to make 'Resident Evil' "serious" will not work, bc its a VIDEOGAME ABOUT A ZOMBIE-COMPANY

Number VII was a lot more horrifying, because the goal of the Evil Company in that game was to just turn people into slaves, and have their governments make profitable decisions. All the typical monsters are just in this one area, that occurred from what’s basically a lab leak.

Um...Shinji Mikami is literally the guy that made up the term Survival Horror for the first game of the series. And obviously it can be done "seriously". And Umbrella is not a "Zombie Company". And they knew how the controls worked. They specifically CHOSE to do Tank Controls for 1.

Im not happy to be an ahckshully guy, but ackshully, interestingly, Resident Evil is about the master plan of a eugenicist oligarch in creating a perfect race. If you think that has no relation to anything we are currently going through, then thats kinda sad.

So... you seem OK, so I'm going to try my level best to be nice about this: [deep breath] That's TRUE, but it's true in the same way that "THE ROOM" is "about the toll infidelity and dishonesty take on modern relationships."

If that was your attempt at "well actually"-ing someone, it failed entirely, primarily due to your inability to understand the meaning of words, from the look of it. Saying a gaming term doesn't mean anything is not anywhere near where you're trying to place it.

Getting technical about it, Survival Horror was originally the marketing tagline for the original Resident Evil, because all the fiddly inventory management and mixing of flavors of herbs was inspired by "Survival" games like Robinson's Requiem... ... and THEN game journalists started just blindly

I mean, the 1996 original is famously a funny game, however unintentional, and it became a core part of that games identity. I wouldn't have objected to some laughs, especially since Zach does it so well. I'd rather he trust his own instinct and not in a test audience.

The hell?! Resident Evil, as a series, is goofy af! Only the REmakes have completely lost their sense of humor. I hope there's a director's cut with ALL the jokes
