The Stop Killing Games movement is officially suing Sony, claiming the company’s “monopoly” over the video game market is blatantly “against the law.” https://bit.ly/4woxbPZ

This isn't Sony's fault. Each generation, the previous media ended and was replaced, VHS, DVD, BluRays, 4K BluRay, then we went digital. Everything went digital from a disc. Movies, games, CDs, this put an end date on the format. Come up with something that can hold a lot of data, is cheap and fast.

But discs are still in use for music and film; moreso, CDs and 4K Blu-rays have actually been increasing in sales YoY. Video games would be the first (and only) medium to be digital-only, in fact.

To be clear, I'm not a fan, taking options away from consumers is never a good thing, unless you're a corporation. I just understand the business justification. It's just suing Sony saying they have a "Monopoly of the gaming market" is a waste of everyone's time.

Yeah, I'm not convinced the lawsuit is gonna have any tangible impact, but I also disagree that their decision is customer-oriented. They could've found much better solutions.

I mean, UHD Blu-rays can technically hold up to 133 GBs. Sure, some games will exceed that, but how many? Like maybe 1% of all games? I'd be okay with that 1% being unplayable off the disc as long as the rest are. Plus if more games were that big, there would be no space on the console storage.

I don't think Sony has said this yet but I'm willing to bet they already know they would need to design a new kind of disc for the next generation and don't want to. Or fill the current ones as much as they can and require a significant download anyway. So, just make it all a download.

I'm for game preservation, but this ain't the way. Sony isn't responsible for the CD. If I were them I'd show up to court with CD manufacturer sales, CD drive sales, DVD/Blu-ray sales, music CD sales. Then I'd point out the industrial, military, & medical fields that have all abandoned the format.

Good. Here's the thing no one ever addresses. What happens if the server gets wiped? For whatever reason the servers loses power, gets destroyed due to natural disasters? Or something major happens and we lose computers as we know them? Then what? Hm? All that digital slop goes poof.
