Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen will return as Frodo and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum — more than 25 years on from when Fellowship of the Ring released, and now director Andy Serkis has said some level of digital de-aging will be used. https://bit.ly/4fxOKI3

There's also like, whole CENTURIES of stagecraft make-up the world over, and specifically movie make-up, and practical effects—but that all requires any interest in human craft and artistry, which are historically not compatible with genAI shills.

Hey, I totally get it. AI sucks big time. I probably hate it more than you do. But I don't think the de-aging tech (that uses machine learning to analyze earlier footage of actors to make CG animation of them) would be called gen AI by most. The muddying of these terms is annoying and dangerous.

Andy Serkis definitely needs better media training on these technologies and what they're actually using in the movie if he's going to be interviewed about this stuff.

Yeah, the headline sucks but he still called the de-aging tech and the tech used in the past to animate crowds of orcs "AI." He's got to be more definitive. I hope he isn't being imprecise on purpose.

Can we stop calling every machine learning based technology AI. AI has become a term that almost exclusively refers to LLM based technology, which most applications of ML are not. I don’t like the use of this technology either, but it’s completely separate from our current societal debate about LLMs

My hunch is that it’s probably not quite accurate to call the process AI exactly, but like, people also don’t like de-aging actors anyway. Also why the fuck is this movie going to be made, what purpose does it serve

The Lord of the Rings is literally the story of Frodo Baggins inheriting a powerful, corrupting ring & embarks on a quest across the earth to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom before the evil Dark Lord Sauron can enslave the world...is now being made with AI. Destroy it now.

Everyone is out here saying this is horrible and inhuman and also degrades the art, which is all true, but my primary question is who the hell decided giving LotR to Andy Serkis was a good idea.
