I didn't say the EU shouldn't do this, it's just interesting to see the different approach. Germany and Italy had just barely finished beating half the continent to a pulp when ECSC was formed.

Exactly, everyone was beaten to the pulp and in no position to invade each other. Not exactly a viable approach to a country with currently active imperialist ambition. "Come join the EU in some form" will be seen as an insult: how dare those destined lands attempt to take our sovereignty!?
