after the m2 announcements the other day i keep thinking about how shmups are the worst genre for the Distribution Situation that they have and that basically all talk about how the scene can grow is moot until the biggest games are all available on all major platforms and regions

An aquaintance of mine told me they were also into shmups and showed me the worst euro-shmup-progression-system-delivery-vehicle of all time and I told them to play Mushihimesama just to find out it had been delisted 😭😭😭

The Main issue is CAVE is the stupidest company on the planet. Toaplan (which is basically proto-cave) actually managed to put out basically all the games anyone cares about on steam and all platforms, and that involved an ex-dev of theirs basically spending 10 years buying all the rights.

no genre of games should basically *require* you to be literate with MAME and/or FBNeo in order to have a decent understanding of how the genre works and it is kind of insane that we've gotten to this point with shmups.

i cant think of a genre with a higher expectation of community literacy of The Classics. i played devil blade, loved it, then like many moved onto arcade emulation and am picking at the cave library. one of the most mismanaged, least accessible libraries in the history of all recorded media

it's a shame because i think this is part of the appeal, it's a niche that operates more like music or movie subcultures in that sense and i think that's very cool; the problem is when they restore the godfather they don't release it exclusively in japan or god forbid on exa label

anyway i know this is the boring thing i always bring up but i do think it's a far bigger problem than the friction of mass audiences being unwilling to open themselves up to arcade design imo and basically impossible to fix without kenichi takano's heart growing three sizes that day lmao

It’s such hot ass. Trying to figure out the best version of to play for Donpachi series alone, a series where every mainline game is somewhat accessible to western audiences, is such a huge pain. And also requires creating a JP switch account just for SaiDaiOuJou. Like what are we doing here??????

My favorite was M2 complaining about people passing around the GG Aleste 3 rom when it's only available on a Switch release in Japan.
