the thing about the pokemon scalper discord posts is they are very funny but they’re not unique. that is how the vast majority of investors, landlords, business owners think. obviously you can find exceptions but that is simply your brain on capitalism

The way they truly believe that "Fair Market Value" means literally as much as they can bleed you dry for. Like they fundamentally do not understand money.

Also every small card business owner absolutely has the same mindset. Just because your local card shop has a table they let you play at doesn't mean they are "the good guys". They're absolutely seething at you for not groveling at their feet thanking them for their benevolence.

Ehh my local card shop sells packs at MSRP and doesn't sell singles, bro makes his money selling toys and peripherals like playmats and sleeves

a capitalist is entitled to his return on investment. it is like water to him. if he does not get it, he ceases to be a capitalist. it’s not greed, not entirely. it’s an existential fear.

when i read capital i thought this stuff was some of the more under appreciated part of it, the way that marx digs into the psychology of it, what living under this system does to you and how it really, truly, isn’t a choice. once you’ve accepted the need for profit, the rest is already justified

It is someone who can't handle the pressure and anxiety of gambling putting a $1000 down on a poker hand that isn't going to finish for weeks and agonizing over it the entire time. And when they lose, they are unable to deal with the reality that everyone who gambles loses.

Like that's what I see when I read all this: gamblers that lost it all but were certain they had the mandate of heaven to win big. It's the same shit when someone tries to buy a condo before it's built trying to flip it day 1 and it ends up worth less than they paid for. Sorry buddy, the House won

It's gambling but you're suppose to win anyway, the amount of winning is the random part, so if they lose, they lose their marbles

I think I've put at least 3 people on the path to radicialisation by moaning about TCG scalpers with them at locals and then subtly inviting them to mentally swap out "Charizard" for "your house" lol

The fact there are game pieces in any given set reaching $100 *while it's running* is insane. I love the game but fuck WOTC and Hasbro.

I think its only become a major story because of the IP being so cemented into the mainstream. Also because the median demographic is younger, and its making it that much more horrible of a situation. No one cared outside of the nerdy MTG peeps, now its coming for their children.
