Meanwhile, there was a riot when some right wingers accused migrants of a crime, none of these politicians or political reporters seemed to talk about it, only fell apart because the cops came forward and said no crime happened. Credit to the BBC fact checking team they did eventually report it

the nakedness with which the press doesnt even try to cover up how it believes that its one rule for the boys club arisotcracy and quite another rule for the proles, the blacks, the gays etc is one of the most insane things about living here. dont even bother with the lie of an egalitarian narrative

It's a bit fucked, and it makes you sound categorically insane to defend this sort of thing, but I would file this in a similar realm as Earmarks. On its face unjustifiable but in effect beneficial to the functioning of the legislature with significant negative 2nd order effects if removed.

"A normal job doesn't require you to sit around for 14 hours" At work I regularly drive two hours to sit in my truck for seven hours, do one task and then drive two hours back to the office and spend an hour filling out reports and I don't even get to have a single beer while I do it

the first op-ed on why mps are uniquely impoverished self-sacrificing heroes who simply must have their subsidised on the job drink or they will literally die has landed

It's exactly the same shit as their refusal to move out of Westminster because they want to keep cosplaying Pitt the Younger amid all the collapsing masonry. Most of their problems are down to self-imposed refusal to engage with modernisation.

"Everybody with power is severely crunched and sleep-deprived. So, in order to make these people - whose decisions will affect millions - more comfortable, they also get drunk on the job." Excellent. Very reassuring.

Whoever wrote that is talking absolute bollocks. I bet it was someone in the Westminster bubble. Poorly paid, long hours 🙄 There are many actual poorly paid jobs with actual long shifts that don’t get perks, expenses and subsidised food and drink and you actually have to work

I heard a candidate for parliament over here (denmark) talk about how the toughest part of campaigning was how much alchohol they were required to drink in order to maintain their political network (volunteers, stakeholders, candidates etc.) Seems like it's very ingrained in the political culture.

Reminds me of minor news in Canadian politics, where Saskatchewan MLA's in the right wing Saskatchewan Party just can't stop drinking and driving. The premier even killed someone drinking and driving and is still somehow premier 11 years after the public learned about that.
