I don't think I'm exaggerating when I'm saying that me and my wife feel like the last survivors in a zombie apocalypse, seeing all close friends and family use this crap more and more. Even a "I just asked ChatGPT what the best GPU for this game is" feels like that hidden zombie bitemark trope

It's disheartening to even consider the way people are phrasing its use: "Chat *told* me", "I *asked* Claude". Have people used this sort of anthropomorphizing language for, say, wikipedia? Even the "text chat" format of these things has so many annoying layers to them

I don't think I have vibed with a sentiment around LLMs more than I have with this quote. Even IF (and that huge "if" says a lot about you btw) you can ignore all the sociopolitical, economical, environmental and ethical implications, how can you justify deliberately dulling your mind and skills?

I think, if I’m being honest with myself, this is the main reason I refuse to touch these things. More so than being environmentally dilligent, even more so than wanting to avoid being a thief. I am very good at my job. I enjoy being very good at my job. I do not want to become less good at my job

For me - as someone who is a self-doubt machine - there are certain tasks that I would love to delegate, much like how one might work with a collaborator. I also don’t hate the idea of better autocomplete*. But any thought of ever doing so dies with the "if" - the ethical implications are too big.

(*not whole functions but like single line stuff. Simple boilerplate syntax, not actual logic. It should never make a design or engineering decision, only let me insert the thing I was already going to write)

Also by "certain tasks" I mean stuff that is REALLY mind numbing. Like Wayland windowing boilerplate. Cmake (though I avoid using that to begin with). Or adjusting bindings between languages. But nigh everyone and everything involved in LLMs is evil so I am not touching it, probably ever.

And that kind of auto complete was already possible and much cheaper before LLMs. Microsoft had a pretty decent one with intellicode until they made it LLM and server-based which ruined anything good about it
