Even on #Rebuild - an event aimed at rebuilding EU (social) tech - there's mostly MacBooks, iPhones, using Claude and connecting to each other on Twitter, LinkedIn.... I mean if this group is not able to change their tools and give a better example, how on earth are we going to convince normies

I get a lot of comments for using proton meet, mostly people have never used it. I'm desperately hoping for someone to compete more directly with the Google office suite (not owncloud) as everyone still uses it.

Protons security model is effectively a walled garden so integrations simply don't exist and external collaboration is difficult.

Ha, I understand. In that way they reproduced the models they're fighting but as an underdog it indeed is not the best to grab new users.

Give it time. The hardcore boycott of Big Tech is not an easy route for most people nor is it the right one imo. The best approach for me is looking at degoogling as actively promoting alternatives. So it is about showing better options, and challenging the status quo not about going cold turkey.

No, I don't expect nor advise anyone to spend months and thousands of euros to force an immediate transition to EU only hard/software. But when a subscription is up for renewal, hardware needs replacing or when starting something new I'd kind of hope/except people to make better choices

If all iPhones in the EU get shut down tomorrow then a lot of people have the same problem and we'll figure it out together. So yes, in the long run I'd like an autonomous phone, but not right now.

Oh yeah I get Brussels' idea to use verified identity to go from "mass online opinion" into something they can weaponize as official opinion of EU citizens. I have 2 issues with that:

/e/OS or Google Android? I'm very tempted to get one in the next ~12 months but not sure if /e/OS is stable enough yet. Would be wonderful to have an almost completely Google-free phone, though

If it doesn't have to be a Fairphone specifically you could as well buy a used Google Pixel and install GrapheneOS. Installation is easy and it works like a charm!

I have a pixel already! Could try that (though feels like a lot of effort when I'm not far away from replacing my phone anyway; will seee)

I guess we have to start somewhere. It's fine to be practical about things and not religiously ban everything before you have proper alternatives available. But yeah, the amount of non-EU tech being used here is still striking.

"... how on earth are we going to convince normies". Classifying your friends as abnormal won't make ATP more attractive to this normie🙃. I think the problem here is that you're comparing the AT protocol only to SOCIAL platforms/networks. It can/will be much bigger than that. compare it it to http.

This wasn't meant to "classify friends as abnormal", this was very much a comment about atproto as a brand/community, how our friends see us (or don't even know about us) and that we clearly need to change some things
