It is very important that everyone know that this is not okay. It's not okay in any way.

found this in an article on how her AI scans users' camera rolls to generate Halloween costume ideas. it gave her an "intriguing" idea (a Wayne Thiebaud inspired dessert) that she couldn't visualize and can't make herself, she's going to pay someone else to do it. making it's the best part.

I mean, she could have at least interviewed her daughter: - What are your greatest strengths? - What are your greatest weaknesses? - Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Not only to DO this, but then tell the story to a REPORTER? As if it was a GOOD THING? Not okay in any way.

“My child came to me to ask why I love her. Instead of responding with my heartfelt thought, I asked my AI personal assistant why I love her…”

“After correcting some hallucinated details, it told me that mammals usually have an innate biological connection with their offspring. Excited to share this fact, I read that to my child. She left the room crying at the beauty of my answer.”

I genuinely think this might be the saddest thing I’ve read on the Internet in a week, and that is saying something. Utter abandonment of the most fundamental task of being a parent: knowing your child.

Another terrible aspect of this is that Mayer treated this like a college application question, as if she's supposed to credentialize her kid as "creative" and "empathetic." But as a parent, when you're asked this, you're getting a chance to tell the teacher what your kid NEEDS.

Parent here, 2 great kids. Maybe in a low moment when you’re overwhelmed by life and its many urgent tasks you might resort to this kind of thing, partly because you’re the tiniest bit resentful to be compelled to answer a 1000th questionnaire…but you couldn’t waterboard out of me that I’d done it

She could have picked 3 random words from the dictionary and it would have been more meaningful. Talk about the opposite of special 🙄

When my kids were young I could fill out a spreadsheet. I coached multiple sports for a lot of years & could come up with 3 for all. I was the safe space for a lot of kids bc they are human beings & need respect not short cuts.

Dad here, this question was so easy I could come up with 3 bullets in 3 seconds - about as long as probably took Marissa Mayer to ask AI for “the answer.”
