I’m sorry, this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read. This is the purest expression of gamer brain ever published. It cannot be parodied.

Folks really need to understand that the context that really matters for a review is the reviewer and the score is unique to that person. You cannot effectively aggregate scores and retain their meaning. There's no magic algorithm that will allow for a consensus opinion about something.

"non-steam activations and free copies" so review copies and previews of any kind don't count. If an influencer/streamer gets a copy, but doesn't have to download thru steam are they going to be discounted, or conveniently will they still have weight? If a game is reviewed via Itch it's fucked?

itch.ioDownload the latest indie gamesitch.io is a simple way to find, download and distribute indie games online. Whether you're a developer looking to upload your game or just someone looking for something new to play itch.io has you co...

I wanna be clear, the scenario I was going for here is like, if a Polygon or Kotaku or PCGamer reviewer doesn't get a Steam copy, but reviews the game via Itch, or some other download path, this statement is saying that's now a valid review worth including.

that part actually makes sense to me, “non-steam activations and free copies” just refers to Steam user reviews, not press. it sucks that legit players with keys from itch or elsewhere get downweighted but it’s a reasonable guard against bad-actor devs generating a bunch of keys to farm reviews

I gotta be honest, in all the bullshit of that original statement idk how you think it's only user reviews being weight when it constantly refers to press reviews.

It’s an assumption on my part, but everything in that last sentence is stuff that you can easily scrape directly out of the Steam review metadata, and downweighting based on those specific factors to curb abuse only makes sense for user reviews.

> Non-steam activations & free copies are downweighted. Sorry charity bundle customers & free game giveaway redeemers, but your opinion is worthless compared to me who bought the game on Steam. My brain couldn’t fully process how backwards the logic is.

that's actually the one logical part (as much as any of this can be logical, anyway). steam does this with their review system to ensure that devs can't bot reviews using giveaway keys. review farming still happens but it's much harder to do at scale if you only count copies paid for through steam.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for clarifying that end. I just found myself really baffled by the wording because I tend to buy Steam keys from official retailers such as Humble, GOG or Itch(dot)io where devs give out DRM free copies or Steam keys of their games.

Nope. If it were "gamer brain", the actual players would be weighted more, not the "press and tracked reviewer". This alone would qualify this as a "journalist score" - at least until yr. 4 or so.

Someone tell bro to just drop the LLM jargon and put a formula at this point. There did a threshold where an actual LaTeX formatted block of math is more comprehensible

Not sure I want to have any idea what's going on here; reads like some reddit-based ex-scientologist cult is attempting to justify why they're proactively prorating GTA 6 a 9.2/10 prior to it's physical/material release based on data science or something...
