Didn’t the creator have a massive mental meltdown because people were criticizing the game? The idea is great, but people were just hoping for a Garry’s Mod 2 on the new Source engine, which S&Box simply isn’t.

Which is really a fault on the expectations and/or understanding of “people”, not the product itself, which is a powerful gaming platform and Unity-like game engine built on Source 2. It has great potential, as far as I can see from my limited tinkerings.

except it doesn't stand out and was a latecomer among the competitors. people can use roblox, unreal editor for fortnite, or now just go with godot and vibe coding. "it's source 2" is meaningless to most folks. the most remarkable thing about this product was always its legacy, for better or worse.
