hm.. I’d assume that the kind of people who download images from websites know about the new formats? And if you double click the downloaded file, it opens in a program that can display it, right?

First assumption: definitely not, though my proposed solution would not work for people who don't know what the formats are at all. Second assumption: oh no, no no no, search "I hate webp" to get a taste of how lack of WebP support in most OSes and apps make people super angry.

People who download images from web pages (including Google image search) need a format to be supported in at least three apps: the browser, their OS's file explorer, and the app where they're trying to use the file (Photoshop, Krita, Google Slides, etc.). Oftentimes there's a fourth or fifth app.

Any missing link in that chain breaks the user's workflow. And even Google, who created and pushed WebP (shipping it in Chrome in 2011 before even finalizing a spec) took more than 12 years to support it in Google Slides, for instance.

haha, okay okay. I hear your pain. Then again, a file explorer and a slides program not supporting webp in 2026 just blows my mind.
