Everyone in Tokyo seems to have a bike so now I'm doing a lot of research into bikes vs e bikes, small tires vs large tires, foldable vs not...

Having ridden a couple of different relatives e-bikes my advice is get a bike that’s fundamentally good as a bike on its own.

Yeah I don't even know if it's worth getting an ebike over a normal bike. My understanding is they make it easier to go faster & up hills, at the cost of greatly increased weight and price tag. So if the battery drains it sucks to pedal without the motor assist?

Increased price tag definitely. Increased weight not necessarily. Pedal assist only is super efficient so those bikes can get away with small batteries that still will get you plenty of range and make you feel like a hero. Bikes that are throttle first are the ones that tend to be unwieldy tanks

looks like they have limited stock they sell in Japan, but are horrendously expensive :( The thick tires might also cause problems here, most of the bike parking assumes thin tires
