I have to admit that the one tiny silver lining of our horrific current moment is that you just don’t see people shanking each other over stuff like “is it cultural appropriation for a white woman to sell coconut water” anymore

>remembering that people used to knife fight for weeks about how fusion cuisine was imperialism

(I also couldn’t help but notice at the time that white *men* running restaurants and selling products from cultures they didn’t originate from usually got way more of a free pass than white women doing the same thing, but well, so it goes).

The other one i still think about frequently are the posters (inevitably white themselves) who were convinced white people saying “y’all”, because they are Southern, are Deeply Problematic

These people do still exist to a certain extent but they seem way more quiet and universally made fun of than they used to be

And yes, we of course should still call out white people who are being shitheads who refuse to acknowledge who they got their ideas from or who inspired them, but I still think deeming randos history’s greatest monsters over stuff like coconut water was not, perhaps, the best use of our energy

at least in my social world, I’m not seeing a retreat from social justice, but I am seeing a pretty encouraging degree of “perhaps we should focus less on being right on the internet as a way to fight bigots, and more on actually doing stuff”

It's the difference between trying to attack someone over a kink that could theoretically be problematic and spending that same energy to attack the actual abusers. We still have bits and pieces of the first one, but it genuinely feels more rare cause it's so tired at this point.

I have been INCREDIBLY encouraged to watch the new generation of ravers tackle these same issues with so much more grace, compassion, patience, and thoughtfulness. There are still occasional excesses but it's just such a healthier approach - they learned from our mistakes.

The "woke mob" was widely overhyped by the far right BUT really did exist (I think more a consequence of occurring alongside the advent of social media rather than anything particular to wokeness) and I feel confident asserting it did more harm than good. But the principles have endured in good ways

I appreciate this thread. It's a good thing to be sensitive to people & cultures, esp marginalized ones. But there is a whole raft of people who substitute a 'gotcha' sanctimony for actual sensitivity. I auppose when "the Woke train" was all the fashion, some people wanted to be the most fashionable

I do think part of it is that a lot of people just aged out of that kind of thing and got more perspective. So online fights about who is allowed to eat what food just puttered out because we’re not in our teens/early 20’s anymore.

I remember when, on my timeline, there was an honest discussion about whether or not it was racist for white people to see Black Panther on opening night or if that should be a space for only black people. I think that was when I realized we may have gone a little too far.

Woke 1 at its worse (nowhere as bad as conservative authoritarianism) "became a vehicle for social climbing and in-group recriminations. Want to declare someone persona non grata? Invent some social justice grievance. Want people to think you're a good person? Say slogans." bsky.app/profile/whst...

This is not an indication that the ideas were taken too far, simply that they were deployed cynically by people who did not care about them. Which, you know, should not come as a surprise when you're talking about the leadership of the friggin' Target Corporation or whatever.

The performative masculinity and meritocracy competence of ass kissing billionaires like Thiel: "Conservative ingroup posting is the real Woke 3.0 "high school dropout who’s never completed any degree, let alone an engineering degree…who is (somehow!) now the CEO of a nuclear technology company. 😬

someone really needs to do a piece about the performative right-wing shitposting that the new group of Thiel-backed tech startup CEOs are doing it really sucks because supersonic flight and nuclear power both seem cool but no way are these dipshits gonna be the ones to make it happen
