1/ So angry. First, this is what "elections have consequences" really looks like. In addition to big stuff like wars and Liberation Day tariffs, the whole vast US machinery of state is now working everywhere, on everything, to make the world worse in every way. Thanks guys.

So agree with you. If he wants to sabotage the US eg offshore wind - it's bad but it's so much worse when he & his cronies sabotage the world at such a vulnerable time 🌍😔

This is why it always feels to me like the whole world need to have a vote at the US elections. We feel so powerless to affect an outcome that will have a profound impact on us all.

No. Do you have a vote in China's leadership selections? Arguably China is becoming more important for the future of humanity than the US. The thing to do is to become independent, to build up ones own power. Especially for Westerners, mental independence from the US is paramount.

Of course I’m not talking literally - that could never happen - but it still leaves me feeling powerless in the face of the US potentially destabilising Europe and hastening climate change.

2/ The US sabotaging this over "price rises for consumers" is riseable given their entire policy agenda is inflationary as hell. Pretty sure tariffs and spiking the price of oil and gas for months is going to hit grocery bills harder than an emission standard the industry itself supported.

3/ Tariff threat arm twisting the small island states facing existential threats from climate change into voting against this is some Saturday morning cartoon villain shit. If someone was doing this in a CW show you'd say it was lazy writing.

Another reason is that, despite the BBC headline aping Trump's claim, the IMO is discussing it again in London this week. Like UCL's Tristan Smith, I'm not confident they'll break the impasse, but the changed context makes the US position that much more indefensible.

reuters.comIn Santa Marta and at IMO meeting in London, could Iran war invigorate talks to exit fossil fuels? When the dates were set for two critical meetings on the energy transition, no one could have guessed that one of the world’s biggest energy shocks would already be changing the calculus. War in the M...

When oil shortages get severe enough won't this be moot because the amount of demand destruction that will manifest will be more of an impact on emissions than any green deal and for what remains we'll naturally see acceleration of transition to non-oil sources?

American arrogance and myopia are wreaking havoc across our ecosystems, economies, and any hope of peaceful coexistence. We must face the uncomfortable truth that the greatest threat to this world is not sitting in Beijing — it is sitting in Washington DC.

And this is *exactly* what Reform would do here in the UK… join forces with this network of malignant power-brokers to bankrupt the people and enrich themselves… All in the name of representing ordinary people and dealing with their “legitimate concerns”. It’s intolerable.

They would waste government money on shutting down wind farms and solar farms, in the pursuit of "common sense". Because that's what Trump is doing. The are parasites, feeding on the prejudices of morons and the disinformed.

My guess is a lot of "ordinary people" don't give that much of a fck and are in it to pull others down. "Own the libs" is just another way of saying I don't want you to have.

Why should London have? is the go to. Not London has proved so that should be rolled out to the rest of the country. Greenshield stamps and shit beer from pubs which don't sell food is enough for thee.

Absolutely correct — and most likely in a quite open and brazen manner. However, I have to say I don’t really see much distance from that on Labour’s side either — admittedly in a far less extreme form. You can’t appease Trump and still think you’ll get to pick and choose your political positions.

On the plus side because he's so shit 100s of diplomatic positions remain unfilled. So yes he's leveraging US weight, but not nearly as effectively as he could because he doesn't understand delegation or can't delegate because the wider the net the more likely he's going to get push back.

See also the dismantling of the UNEP Net Zero Alliance. It was doing fantastic collaborative work to standardise ESG monitoring, classification and reporting until US groups went after it threatening the members with anti competition law suits.

This is what happens when you elect greedy people with no long term interests. People are voting with their wallets for EVs or solar panels. But this won't touch the sides when policies favour polluters.
