Good morning from the Jersey shore! Beautiful spot and yet so strange! Everywhere I’ve lived, public lands (forest, beach, desert) has always been the norm. To see the beaches here owned and operated by the towns is so strange! And many require “beach badges” to use.

I know now it’s historical: these beaches as constructs for play are from the late 19th century, and yet the idea that they are not for everyone is so foreign to my western US brain.
