On Mastodon, there's a misconception that you have complete ownership and control over your data. This is only accurate if you host your own instance. If your admin chooses to shut down the server at any moment without a notice, recovering your account, followers, or posts becomes impossible.

There is a substantial amount of trust placed in the individual(s) responsible for managing your Mastodon host. In Bluesky, based on my minimal reading, this is a non-issue. You can maintain your identity through your domain, and your signed data is distributed among other hosts and indexers.

You can retrieve your identity and all your data if you face a ban or if your server ceases operation suddenly for any reason. This is still in theory yet but I am eager to see the practical implementation. Correct me if my understanding is inaccurate.
