Games Done Quick this year has been a great reminder that videogame culture - the actual culture, not aggrieved incels on Youtube - is pretty fucking cool. You'll never hear about some grifter raising millions for charity to riotous applause.

GDQ and most speedrun communities in general are shining examples of how yes, you can exclude bigots and other bad actors from spaces and not only make them a net positive but allow them to thrive and reach further than they could if you're weighed down with constant negative energy.

If you ever think suffering those types of bad people is part of being a budding community, just imagine how many great people you actually want in the space, just one bad actor drives away. Spaces are more manageable, beneficial, & enjoyable when you don't walk a line between inclusion & exclusion

As I've gotten older I've stopped suffering shitheels and if I check out a community and some small percentage of its members are the kinds of people I would punch in the throat, I check out immediately. Someone said your forum/subreddit/discord's "culture" is its worst member and I take it to heart

I mean, the GDQ bundle humble ran is better than the goddamn Humble Choice. Whatever that’s worth. And if anyone cares now for a multitude of reasons. Even if I’m forced to call Sonic Lost World “One of the Sonic games of all time”.

Also a reminder that GDQ wasn't always this great diverse event! It had plenty of opportunity to back-slide into bigotry, but instead they laid down hard rules and banned a bunch of assholes from their events. There are still whole YouTube channels dedicated to how GDQ is 'failing' because of Woke.

It's a great example of what community-building looks like. They've got big regular trans-inclusive womens-only events and black community events. People at the top have gone out of their way to promote inclusivity. And the result is a great community full of amazing people and very few jerks.

I was able to tune in throughout the week and I noticed that - the promotions for their other events to get new and more people involved in more directed inclusivity spaces. Love it all around!

Even folks that have been critical of the event continue/start running/staffing the event; because despite occasional sore spots, the net positive is so much more impactful than the perceived negatives.

I was thinking similar things watching it. Also a lot masks was a great to see as well as disabled folks being included and accommodated. Love an inclusive community.

I was actually just thinking of this earlier, while certain corners of the internet want everyone to think GDQ is forever in a perpetual nosedive, the truth is they've pretty consistently raised the same amount of money every major event if not more. It's wild

Sena Bryer (Wuk Lamat from ff14) donated during Unicorn Overlord and I worried that she'd get some transphobic hate from the chat but thankfully she got well-deserved applause and thank-yous. It proved to me that curating your audience and banning the bad actors DOES WORK.

It was confusing in recent years when the moderators blocked some players allegedly for swearing and some fans just couldn't handle that. I couldn't be bothered to make an informed opinion at the time but I remember thinking that this wouldn't last long as a charity event without moderation.

We just went from someone doot-dooting bosses in Elden Ring to a band backed Crazy Taxi run? Games and gamers are the best! Fuck the grifters. They wished they were even a fraction as cool as those people

And they raise more *every year* It would have been understandable for if they reached a plateau and just came down a little from it in following years, especially in this economy. But somehow they constantly break their record every year. Their method just works

apparently. not many video game related videos anymore. and one look at his X: The Everything App account and i see him retweeting some bogus conspiracy bullshit from a right wing loon
