For decades, European politicians have not been honest with their citizens about the degree to which they live in a US protectorate. Dumping the entire truth now on a public that has been up till now blissfully unaware is a hard task. My emergency #EUCO curtain-raiser:

There are none so blind.... I don't think it's just the fault of politicians. We citizens have responsibilities too to see the reality. Irish like myself often the worst offenders on this. For not misunderstandsble reasons

Yes exactly. The whole military spending issue is a red herring. Yes Europe should spend more on defence, but the spending isn't the problem. The problem is the lack of a sovereign European defence with its own command and control structure. The problem is that there's nothing other than NATO.

I think there’s a model where we keep nat armies under joint command but have a shared “EuroArsenal” that does the heavy lifting of purchasing high cost fighters etc and leases them out to those who need them. And maintains the huge amounts of battlefield consumables Ukraine has shown is needed.

What you're saying is of course true. What's also true is that the only way the EU progress as a "project" towards United States of Europe is through crisis. Be it debt, health, security... And yes, it's possible that one day we will run out of road.
