Plex is the right choice for all but a vocal minority. If you have anyone over the age of 40 trying to access your server from anything other than a smartphone or the web, which I'd guess is a large portion of self-hosters, Jellyfin probably isn't for you. Sucks you got caught up in the flame war.

I would love if the open source alternative was just as good or better, but that's simply not the case here. Two of the main reasons Plex costs money are device compatibility and secure remote access, and that's exactly where Jellyfin lacks.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying for the longest time and my big reason why I recommended plex. That said…the conversation changes at $750 At that point, if you hate having to setup jellyfin yourself, go pay someone $200 to do everything for you 😭 it’s still come out cheaper than plex lifetim

Problem with Jellyfin is their media matching is quite awful, default design is terrible and to fix it you have to get yourself deep into CSS and their apps for different platforms are non-existent … yes, there are alternative apps by independent devs, but there is no cohesion between them.

Plex was my first step into self hosting my media at the age of.. 10. It was great! Until I tried to access my media from my phone and it asked my to pay. Switched to jellyfin and never looked back. Also hate how they made Plex Pass $750. And is that (self hosted) music on a switch??
