I’m seeing a lot of support for what happened in Paris on social media, but I’m left wondering: How the hell did it get this bad? And do you think it helped the cause?

Protesting increases in the cost of living and environmental destruction without violence seems like something we can all get behind with the exception of the *rich and diehard right* who have the means to fund whatever message they want to send.

Wanton violence and destruction bring nothing to sell any cause, especially when the root cause for most of the cost of living crisis lies squarely at the door of TRUMP and PUTIN for the TWO WARS they started. The rest is greedy oil companies and market speculators exploiting the oil supply issues.

The point is not to get more people on your side. The point is to realize there are consequences for not listening to the protesters. If literally anyone in the USA were willing to do the same, our protests might not be so ignored.

The kids are pissed and have every right to be. This is the result of years of corporate and billionaire greed. How is it that you think it doesn’t “help the cause?” Ok EVerYoNe JuSt PrOTesT PeAcEFullY!! WTF Chris

Ten years of Macron means ten years of inequality, of handouts to the richest paid by the poorest. It means public services, hospitals, and schools falling into disrepair. It means far-right billionaires taking control of the media. Contempt and poverty for workers, racism and discriminations on ↗️.

It depends on the cause. It certainly highlighted how France has higher growth in demand for public services than its slowing economy can support. This formerly prosperous and innovated nation is now living off old wealth and in decline.

I’m convinced this was fueled by right wing agitators to harm Macron who has been a leader of the European Union. I sound like a conspiracy enthusiast, but we know Republican PACs have funded far left Democratic candidates here in primaries in hopes of disrupting general elections.

I really believe that Russia sent agent provocateurs to cause this damage. Russia is already at war with the EU and a large protest is easy to take advantage of in such a way and escalate into violence and destruction.

I don't know, I'd have to be thinking in their culture, not mine. But I can pretty much guarantee Americans doing "shocked inhale" about it on the eve of their polite quarterly one-day protest won't have any effect.

I think the cost of living is going to be an ongoing issue globally. Climate change is unpredictable and causes such damage. It will drive up the cost of living. Governments will find it difficult to cope.

Ppl have peaceful protests about cost of living increases but criminals take advantage of the situation to loot businesses. Who are the criminals? RWngers in Europe claim they're immigrants. But it's not clear from news articles who they are or who organized them BLM protests had this problem too

yahoo.comRioters loot stores, set fires in central Milan during cost-of-living protestROME (AP) — Rioters clashed with police, looted stores and set property on fire in central Milan on Saturday, emptying Piazza del Duomo and a luxury shopping arcade when the area would usually be teem...

There is huge inequality in paris. Those are Highly insured shops for wealthy people who created the poverty the protest was about. This is how France works.

I don’t know if it helped the cause, that remains to be seen, but you can’t deny that the French know how to protest. They are all in. Vive Le Manifestation! 🇫🇷

No it did not help the cause. Violence NEVER helps the cause. All sympathy for the cause evaporates the second violence hits the streets. And it gives fuel to authoritarians who are just itching to deploy a jack-booted police state all across the country. Don't even THINK of trying this, America.

I am all the more grateful that Indivisible and other organizers of the No Kings movement have stressed the need to be peaceful. They really hammer that point home in all their communications and it is a big part of the success of the demonstrations. Things can go bad fast.

It's being fuelled by the Far Right with Putins blessing. Getting rid of Macron means ultimately Ukraine will fall Serious critical thinking needs to be applied here

Getting rid of France, German, UK, Spainish leadership, with a flip to the right would be the final blow to Ukraine, and the free world. America can't be counted on, and Musk is pulling all the strings to make this all happen.

Macron is inelligible to stand. The French Constitution limits Presidents to 2 consecutive terms. If the centrists hadn't fucked everything up by channeling the wealth to bankers, investors, corporations and others of the elite, then Russia's Mélenchon & Le Pen wouldn't stand a chance.

And no, it doesn't mean Ukraine will fall FFS. Le Pen as President in France, Weidel as Chancellor in Germany, or whatever doesn't mean Ukraine will fall. It won't help, but Ukrainians have plenty of agency and are developing long-range missiles to take the fight deeper into Russia.

Ukrainians aren't weaklings like the others. So let's not invest too much effort into the false analysis. French youth and underclass have been abused for many decades. It is their right to revolt against the political and business elite that betrays them. So, support them.

America is filled with cowards, so not to heavy on the judgment. People here will vote for a racist and a rapist because eggs are too high. This might not be the right population to poll.

More people didn't vote because they believed those same right-wing agitators that "Harris will be worse for Gaza! owo" and "Biden endorses genocide!!!" Americans are fucking morons.

Many liberals are afraid of real revolutions because they are not pretty. Cubans prior to the Cuban Revolution understood why their revolution occurred. Mass poverty pushes society to unrest and social unrest. It happens in countries in massive crises in history.

That’s heartbreaking. Doesn’t show a desire for change but for destruction. Use your voices not your viscous anger.

Russia has agents mixed in with the crowd to spark violence. It is part of their hybrid warfare. There were legitimate reasons to protest, but those starting and perpetuating violence were foreign agents bent on destabilizing France for its opposition to Russia.

"How the hell did it get this bad?".....maybe because people are tired of no one listening to them...no one seeing them. "Do I think it helped the cause?". No. Unless things change in the direction the citizens want there will never be satisfaction and those responsible will just get angrier.

As I watch the video I see stores very few can afford. Maybe wealth disparity is coming to roost? I refuse to blame the students. Blame those in charge. Blame the disgusting rich. Blame out of control Pride and Greed.

Always the same story really: peaceful manifestation… violent idiot who look for an excuse the wreck things… police violently respond on the wrong set of people… And of course politicians who either try to jump on a crisis to make it worse… and other who push hard core repression on the hopeless.

Americans don’t know what it takes to stand up for rights As we cling to the last threads of democracy and watch unmarked masked men abduct people in our towns, you ask “do you think it helps”? Wake the fuck up, America

It got this bad because for years the one generations in France have insisted that the next generation pays for the current generation's debt. That gets to a critical point nie Also not tagging the ultra-rich properly but that's a worldwide problem

they are not like us, we fear our politicians, they politicians are taught to fear a betrayed public. We are submissive, a beggars disposition, they are in command of policies they insist on.....or else. We bow down, they fight for healthcare, education, pension. not hard, look in your mirror.

Protests are good; looting and vandalism are bad. They turn people away from your cause. Dr. King understood this. With that said, France has a long history of protests joined by radical elements and anarchist groups that have spilled over into clashes with police, property damage, and looting.

They were not asking permission, they were seizing the initiative. Just like the businesses that keep them in poverty are also seizing the initiative without permission. It's not the poor people starting wars, hoarding assets and wrecking the planet. Their anger is justified and is not going away

The mayor of Marseille seems to claim that CRS companies (demonstration police) were focusssed on targetting "pacific" demonstrations, while leaving unrestrained destruction and looting happen in other parts of the town, not in the demonstrations themselves www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2e0...

Idem in Lyon, Paris etc. They were too busy harassing the peaceful protesters. bsky.app/profile/brev...

🔴🇫🇷VIDÉO - Une personne qui manifestait a été lynchée par une horde de forces mobiles de la police à #Paris, à coups de pied et de matraque. La personne est ensuite laissée au sol, visiblement inanimée.

Even if the reasons for the protest were legitimate, all this vandalism will only ensure the victory of the FN in the upcoming elections - and the additional violence after. Putin will be happy.

Wonder who is really behind this? There may be a lot of bad external actors fueling and funding the unrest.

Not at all suggesting the same. Because I live across the world from Paris. But during the BLM riots in the US, Russian bots fabricated stories online which in turn made the protestors more angry and destructive. I would guess, it’s a combo of many things & it turned into a free for all.

It is terrible that it has to come to this but this seems the only thing that gets attention. People's hunger is never spoken of like it doesn't exist.

I think this is a tinder box built by the far right (a global entity, intent on bringing one 1 global power) and they’ve a pocket full of matches to burn it all down

Well it's according to what and whose stuff you're burning down. If they are just targeting the oligarchs stuff then sure. But it doesn't look like that huh. If any of the targets weren't rich people's stuff it helps people hate others, and it may end up misdirected. Helping the far right.

The ruling class can dismantle education as much as they want. People are not stupid. Once their economic situation gets worse and worse, they know that their main enemies are billionaires and corporations that keep raping their country.

I believe the people are becoming more frustrated with the corruption within their governments. They feel their voices are being ignored and their quality of life is eroding. When left without legal options to enact change, they resort to violence. It can absolutely happen in America....

Vote blue no matter who this November and get involved in your local Democratic politics year round. Change must happen from the bottom up. That means all of us have a civic responsibility to be involved.

What is lacking in our government is integrity. If the people being elected to government had it, their vote could not be bought by billionaires. They would serve the people that put them in office instead of using the office to increase their personal wealth....

That is true. That is why we need to all vote blue to break up the Republican trifecta. It is just a start of a many years effort to make things better than they’ve ever been before. We need massive engagement. We, the people, have to do the work.

You know the far right will have sparked the looting, Penn was on Tv not long after saying only she and her policies can end this, they do the same everywhere.

When people’s legal, sincere pleas for fairness and equity and justice are consistently ignored and derided, what options are left?

Rioters don't care about the workers who have to clean up after them. They just gave a huge boost to Le Pen who can complain about 'out of control crime'

Ahead of the French elections, the russians are supporting both the far right and the far left because their preferred candidates are the National Rally (RN) and La France Insoumise (LFI),both of which advocate pro-russian policies. This explains why the moderate Glucksmann is facing massive attacks.

it does not. all over in france and now Italy there are well organized rioters piggy back legitimate protests. these are not protesters. these are anarchists organized by dark money. they move in groups. i know. i am traveling in both countries now. chaos benefits right wings for worldwide elections

I’ve seen Paris in worse shape, from prior riots, and it got this bad because the govt chose to have a violent police response to peaceful protest which gave all the extremists cover to be extreme. Extremism only helps the govt get more fascist.

Inequality. Lack of adequate resources distributed amount all French schools. Once that fuse was lit, other disparity issues boiled up to the surface.

There’s protesting. And then there’s chaos, looting and hooliganism. This was not protesting. It will not help whatever cause they were supposedly protesting for.

They were helping right up to the point where the looting and wanton destruction began. Those things de-legitimize even the most just protests...

Imho, the French rage against their govt and let them know that the people of France rule France, not the govt. They rise up and this isn’t the first, nor the last time they will do so. They are polite, until they’ve been wronged and they let their govt know to be cautious of wronging them.

Eventually, the proletariat must be able to scare the hell out of the rich and powerful. We should take a lesson from the French (they have provided several over the last couple hundred years).

Marie La Pen and the right wing Nationalists Have pushed for decades to let parents randomly dictate how schools are run. The chaos of paying too much and getting too little is explicitly tied to parental meddling.

People around the world are finally pushing back against governments that allow the rich to do what they wish without having to pay any taxes. It is dangerous when only a few billionaires control what goes on with the rest of us. If I was a member of that billionaire class I think I would be nervous

As usual, bad actors joined initial, legit protests. Also as usual, the government could have nipped protests in the bud and it never would have gotten this bad if the government would just …. What? …. start fixing the schools, provide equipment & clear out rats? Nah let’s let hell break loose

This is really happening. There have also been large scale protests and riots in some parts of Italy. This is the price of allowing immigration. The government is weak and incompetent, and the situation still hasn’t been brought under control.

It’s the only thing the isolated wealthy fear. When they leave it as the only tool for the masses, don’t be surprised when people use it.

Sorry but violence or the threat of violence is the only thing that can bring peace. If your movement doesn't have an implicit "or else", then why would anyone listen to you? Gandhi had the Indian national army. MLK had Malcolm x. If TPTB aren't afraid of not dealing with you, then they won't.

Far right groups & Putin are creating propaganda mainly through social media. They've been fanning the flames. They are trying to bring down democracies & take over governments like they did to the US. This is modern day warfare. Control information, you control the world. It spreads like a cancer.

I think police repression made it much worse. And, for better or worse (it is not fair for the business owners) this happens in France every year. France has a major riot every year. It is a part of their political culture.
