I love Vonnegut but this kind of story, while inspiring, leaves out the fact that he in fact was a winner at the author game. Successful artists are super annoying when they "inspire" people by saying is beside the point, even though they themselves have themselves are winners.

Speaking of artistic failure "Is beside the point" should be "success is beside the point"

Success is a social construct the individual can not achieve.

Connections, luck & timing are why 1 out of 1000 succeed, all things being equal, which they never are.

Many people do all the same exact things as Vonnegut, with equal innate talent, and get nowhere. Maybe they're consoled by the work being the thing, even if they're facing cans at a grocery store to survive.

I keep making music for what it does for me, even if I'm stunningly unsuccessful at it. But when a successful artist says that my situation is as valid as theirs, I want to tell them, "No it fucking well is not!"
