Just for some contexts, historically multiple federal and law enforcement agencies have provided extra diplomatic security during events like this. So it's not that it's something new, it's just in the occurrence situation and the current environment it's a stupid idea.

Italy needs to advise the US that government security accompanying the US Olympic team is prohibited from possessing and carrying firearms on Italian soil. And further prohibited from interferring with anyone legally in Italy. Any ICE officer who violates the prohibitions will be summarily deported.
