It's wild how much JS and old HTML/CSS hacks I can replace with just a few lines of CSS grid, native CSS animations, and the popover attribute…

It's amazing indeed. And, with the popularity of the HTMX library, how little JS you actually need to create advanced web applications as well. It's like we're returning to the roots of simplicity.

<details> and <dialog> are very cool. Browsers now support `loading=“lazy”` on images. <datalist> is interesting but I’m not using it yet. Another one I’ve been using more is the `Intl` APIs—there’s a lot of stuff, especially around formatting, that I used to use a lib for that Intl does natively.

HTML Forms can have multiple submit buttons. Submit buttons support: 🔥 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 attribute to change the endpoint. 🔥 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚 to skip client-side validation. Combine with Laravel session _𝙤𝙡𝙙_𝙞𝙣𝙥𝙪𝙩 to make built in calculators that populate other fields with server-calculated values.

Haha, that feels about right. There are definitely things that I still do to this day that are probably 100% unnecessary, but I lived through the early days of web design… frames -> tables -> floats -> flexbox -> grid

(Any time I see a JS framework boast about how things like sidebar scroll position is preserved across pages, I think about how we had that with the <frameset> tag in the 90's 😂)

Spent a lot of time at Yahoo making sure things ran on IE52, because it was the best free browser available to people who either could not or would not pay for OSX. So many scrollbar issues....

It's wild how many hours of my life used to be spent browser testing, adding conditional comments or using CSS syntax hacks (star hack? backslash hack?) to code around little quirks. Nowadays, I maybe have to worry about that stuff once or twice a year at most…

At Y! we had a double-wide cubicle full of various beige boxes running various OS and browser versions. Prior to the 2006 redesign everything had to work on everything, all the way down to Netscape 4.79.
