The reason I've gone more left in recent years is that I previously accepted that we simply couldn't afford decent cheap housing, heavily subsidised transport, a universal basic income, etc. Then in 20 years in politics I saw what we actually could afford. And it's a lot. It's just never for you.

There's always enough to give the rich a tax break. There's always enough to double the budget for the military. There's always enough for meaningless wars. But there's never enough for the poor & hungry babies home and abroad.

It's ~$10 billion to house every homeless person in the US for a year Independent estimates on the cost of the war with Iran so far are about $100 billion We could easily make huge differences in the quality of life for tons of Americans but we don't

Within living memories, young people could afford to buy houses. The cost was about 2 times a middle class average salary and there were mortgage burning parties after 10-20 years. Then businesses bought up all the housing and lenders ASSIGNED YOU a credit score, unless you had $$$ to circumvent it

The gop shows us that they can cut affordable housing, defund public transportation, keep people poor, crush public education, and kill anyone if you pray hard enough.

Moreover, education, healthcare, and renewable energy are investments that just create more wealth. Super yachts, stock buybacks, and concentration camps are not.

What is often ignored, are the long-term costs of neglecting housing, public health, and education. Keeping someone in school or in his/her flat is often a lot easier and probably cheaper than re-integrating early school leavers or homeless people into society.

But some of those resources will go to brown people, and we just can’t have that… /s (which I really hope is obvious, but just in case)

I guess I have become farther left over the years in that feeding the billionaires to the dogs seems like something that should be part of a campaign platform. Seriously, though, it has become more obvious that capitalism is not meeting the moment.

I wish more liberals would understand govts create money. They can never not have enough. The only limit on spending is the real resources available for it to spend on. this should be the start of every spending decision. Is their enough available to do X. finding the money isn’t the problem.

Nobody in US politics or media ever asks "how will we pay for it?" if the "it" is war, or tax cuts, or corruption, or ICE, or.... All of those are free.

Agreed. The barrier is political will, not cash. Funds flow for wars, tax cuts and bailouts but we hear "unaffordable" for housing, transit, SNAP and Medicare. Drop the taxpayer money myth. Money is always there; it's the will to help average Americans that's missing. They choose who gets it.

The people who tell you money doesn't grow on trees, or quote Thatcher by saying "the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money" are constantly running out of other people's pension funds with their dumb startup ideas that somehow got Series A funding.

The people who tell you that you should be able to afford to feed a family on 50 quid a week argue that this doesn't even cover a single breakfast when it's applied to them.

This warped and disingenuous idea of socialism being a free for all for layabouts actually does exist. It just exists for rich, privileged people who consider it their entitlement. If you're from a poor background, that comes with guilt about earning or having too much money. They never had that.

Unemployment, poverty and homelessness are all deliberately manufactured and maintained in order to suppress wages and terrorise the working class into obedience. None of this is inevitable. This is the world that the bosses choose to create.

Yeah when Elon Musk found the "magic money computers" the media/journalists needed to use that moment to explain to the public how the govt spends. They didn't. Instead, we got 1000s of posts & articles about how Trump is wasting your'taxpayer dollars.'

There's a lot of really terrific we can afford and we don't spend money on it because of government does not prioritize the really terrific stuff over all the bullshit. Why did that make you go left?

We’ve cut taxes on billionaires and ballooned debt. That debt is held primarily by the same billionaires and institutions that benefited from the tax cuts. They’ve benefited from both sides of this. It is a massive, decades long rip off.

While we are on the subject . . . Here is a map of who has bought Republicans, and been paid for it. 40% of US corporate stock is foreign owned. ( ITEP.org ) So they are yanking the strings in DC, and foreigners and our top 5% got a huge tax break. it’s got to stop — b.rad
