It is really weird having grown up and formed the foundations of my political worldview under neocons who were really wily and deep statey only to have the political right switch to "We're doing Fascism, like from the Wikipedia article 'Fascism'"

I feel like I was fighting a super scary shadowy elden ring boss and then the boss got way bigger and became like.... a ferris wheel of swastikas lumbering around

I think the part I couldn't imagine was the right dropping carefully rehearsed Bible banging for an extremely shoddy and transparent revenge based state religion that's pointless to even address

Yep yep yep. This is why I blank out now if people claim this is because of economic conditions. Clearly it's not a problem for their elite! And economic conditions have literally no effect on the supporters devotion!

I still feel surprise that a significant category of person in my life made this shift. They used to have values I could at least hope to appeal to but have turned implacable. The sort of person who used to quote Bonhoeffer now quotes Schmitt.

I have the hardest time with the fact it worked. My in laws’ neighbors (except for former Detroit Tiger Chet Lemon, who is cool) worship the guy and engage in outward displays of supplication to the Cheeto god.
