As much as I dislike W Social, I can confirm that this is NOT the case. There is nothing preventing outward migrations. I did it myself just now with a test account to verify. Thread:

I created a brand new test account and opted not to verify. For what it's worth, on the intro flow W does sort-of advertise the fact that they are part of the Atmosphere, though in a way that non-technical users probably won't understand.

The account was created but W would not let me use the app without verifying my age as it is "required by law in my region". In fact the app is logged in in the background, this screen is a modal on top of it.

I was able to bypass the ID requirement by logging in ONCE with a VPN from Sweden. After this I was not prompted to verify my age again even when logging in without a VPN.

I wanted to test changing my handle to my own domain. W have removed this option from their Bsky clone. By logging in with bsky.app I was able to change to my own domain with no issues.

Next I wanted to try migrating away from W Social. I used @pds.dad's PDS MOOver, entered my login details etc, and clicked the button. W's PDS emailed me a confirmation code, I entered it on PDS MOOver, and the migration was complete. It was exactly like migrating from any other PDS.

Nice! Did you have to do anything to get a password for your oauth account? Was thinking by default you don't get one for your account and they expect you to use OAuth, I think that has been the hang up I've seen

I didn't use OAuth at any point, I only logged in with username and password. They ask you to set a password on step 1 of the signup flow. This is before any mention of W ID or anything; I don't *think* there would be a way to skip it.

But if you did end up without a password (as I did after migrating *back* to W) you can reset it from the login page and they send a confirmation email (I assume this is a standard feature of the PDS)

No worries! They certainly don't do anything to make it clear you can migrate (or really that the rest of the Atmosphere even exists) but contrary to what I have seen implied, they don't seem to actively prevent it.
