I’m sure this is a AI realization many others have had The greatest deception I feel I’m seeing is the promise of turning AI users into masters of many crafts @alexhillman.com’s “Tiny MBA” (which you should buy this for a gift this week) recommended Cal Newports “So Good They Can‘t Ignore You”

AI promises mastery. Its deeply deceptive because it does things which otherwise to you feel like magic IF you do not already have mastery over the subject So then we just chalk it up to AI can do it Im not arguing against using AI at all but as humans we have a deep need to master a skill

AI is a race to the bottom, in the way most ppl are using it. To get the most out of it I feel you do have to be really solid in your field. Sure things that are monotonous and should be automated should. But for craft? Just all my thoughts. Working through the book.

For software development, and probably other fields, I keep finding myself using this analogy: Hand tool : Power tool :: Hand coding : AI coding Lay people can use power tools and be “successful enough” but it won’t look like an expert did it, and it’ll have rough edges and bugs.

Being an expert is still valuable for overall quality, but the construction is different. And for many people (like lots of DIY remodelers out there) “ok” is “good enough.”
