I’ve always wondered why Apple chose a white embossed box for the iPhone 6 when every iPhone before and since has featured the device in colour on its packaging…

iPhone 6 was the debut of the new curved-edge form factor, something that stuck around until iPhone 12. The embossed iPhone pattern was done to specifically highlight that change in form factor, as it was a big part of their marketing that year (that and the larger screen).

Wasn’t the iPhone 6 cutting it real close mfg-wise at release? That’s my memory of it. It’s also the first year they had two phone sizes, all in a bunch of colors. I figure this meant they only needed to order two box sizes, and they could throw whatever phone passed QA in there.
