The more I read about that era, the more the overwhelming majority of the men come off as creepy, if not outright predatory. I feel like a lot of hippie circles were hotbeds of misogyny.

That wasn't hippie circles, that was just society as a whole at that time, when it was still illegal to be gay, sodomy laws were the norm, and people were scandalized by women starting to use "Ms."

Hippy circles had their own issues, since they were all into the "free love" thing, which often turned out to be a way to pressure girls into sex. They'd torn down the old rules, but didn't really have a good moral structure to replace them yet.
