One of Many Cases: This settlement doesn't affect other AI lawsuits. Each case proceeds independently with potential separate payouts. We expect more licensing opportunities as AI companies seek legal solutions.

Obviously many authors don’t want licensing opportunities, to be clear—they want the affirmed right to say no to the usage as they would to any other non-fair use usage of their work. And then appropriate penalties should that right be violated.

No Future Rights: The settlement only covers past piracy. Anthropic must destroy all pirated copies and obtain books legally going forward. Any future pirated use will create new liability.

Next Steps: The settlement administrator will create a searchable database in mid-October for authors to check if their work is included. Official notices with claim forms will be sent directly to eligible authors.

Settlement Details: Authors will receive approximately $3,000 per qualifying title. About 500,000 titles qualify out of millions downloaded. Books must have ISBN/ASIN numbers and proper Copyright Office registration timing to be eligible.

Question on this slide for folks—it does unfortunately absolve Anthropic of PAST training on the works though, correct? Because Alsup ruled as such, so that's best that can happen here? But future case could still be brought for current/future training, doesn't affect other companies, etc.?

"For books where the author has granted the publisher an exclusive right to publish the book, the publisher is the legal owner, and the author is the “beneficial” owner under copyright law." So if the book is not out of print, it's the publisher, not the author, who gets the money? #Anthropic
