Post

I <3 this... I learned to keep my mouth shut and keep my head down growing up, and I have found that it makes me invisible at work. And I have a profound dislike - and distrust - of work hierarchies. It's a real career limiter... :)

but actually... ha... I'm more interested in your use of Astro for your blog and how it compares to something like Ghost. Ya know, the important things ;)

I just spent the last hour (I am an extremely slow reader) with your post and the comments here. It's validating to hear that someone with a profile like yours, and all these people reacting share some of the same struggles as I.

Beyond commiserating, thank you for the reminder of the privilege I hold and the need to be empathetic toward others. I'm blown away by your talent as a writer.

like getting punched in the face: “don’t come in until the streetlights come on” but I internally added “and keep your brother out of trouble”

"silence became synonymous with strength, and asking became something to avoid unless it was urgent" ... Oh well. This hit deep 🥲 I may have cried a bit reading it all 🥲🥲🥲 thank you so much for writing this.

I grew up in the fifties. I lived in a suburb of Chicago but we had a dinner bell. We were very independent. Also, "stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about." We were very tough. Also the eldest, it was acceptable to hit the young ones. Took me until my sixties to understand my damage.
