I'm curious, is there a better or more precise word for the difference between a person who's under anesthesia or comatose vs. one who's functioning normally? I don't really believe in 'consciousness' in the hard problem sense, but the term seems medically useful, in the english language anyway

my wife notes the ancient Greeks had nothing quite like our concept of consciousness. they were probably right

Dewey mentions it here. I’d say “awake” is probably the closest alternative. I agree this use of the word is relatively precise, and it’s not obvious how it relates to the other senses. because we also don’t want to say the robots can dream

William James and to some extent Thomas Hobbes here is John Dewey tracing the lineage over 2 pages in 1906 brocku.ca/MeadProject/...

this is babble, but James, Dewey, and Charles Sanders Peirce regave us words like content and context but also “Stream of“ Consciousness in the 1890s to early 1910s debating this subject matter. This is pragmatism and later act theory including all those “performative acts” of Butler Gender

Theory and JL Austin How to Do Things with Words (1950s) which is based on William James as lecture series later a book. ===== At the same time William James was conversing with his brother Henry James the ghost story author of things like Turn of the Screw, consciousness and haunting.

And we can see the “private” languages of these brothers of how each other work influenced each other such as the later golden bowl after the other brothers work. ===== And to be difficult here David Crespo we do have fragments of similar stuff such as the bsky.app/profile/davi...

the better words we debate — knowing, thinking, believing, understanding, imagining, remembering, perceiving, reasoning, living, pleasure, pain, desire — have close or exact ancient Greek analogues. some even correspond to multiple words that mark subspecies distinctions, like noesis vs dianoia
