Knowing these guys a bit, I’ll slightly disagree. They were always regressive, and don’t actually have enough fluency to have a genuine political POV. This is why bullshit narratives that flatter them, like Yarvin-style neoreaction, could easily sway them. Then, rising worker power radicalized them.

Lots of discussion of this. Still think the best explanation for tech lord rightward lurch on culture war (trans rights, immigration, crime, etc.) is middle-aged white guy syndrome. They aged into the Trumpiest demographic. Income doesn’t explain it. Millionaires, $200K+ earners went for Harris.

This just underscores for me that Obama knew how to handle these guys in a way that neither Biden, nor Clinton, really grasped. He fed their egos, gave them some photo-ops, buttered them up in the press. A little bit of glad-handing can go a long way

Musk was just one contractor and had a credible product at the time. It wasn’t an unreasonable decision then. The problem is a legal and financial system that let him accrue so much more power without accountability.

Privatizing space is insane It’s creating a state within a state And the problem is that we no longer understand that a corporate charter is just a law that says: Here you go. You have tons of power to organize our economy
