Experiments conducted with the A.I. system Claude are producing fascinating results—and raising questions about the nature of selfhood. Gideon Lewis-Kraus reports from inside the company that designed it, Anthropic. newyorkermag.visitlink.me/rOfXjg

The thing is it's not useful for anything, really. It's a fancy version of what happens when you type on your phone and it gives you three options for a word you might want to type next. Except it's polluting and using exorbitant resources. It doesn't need democratization. It needs to be cast aside.

It’s really fascinating to me that both the “it’s not useful for anything really” side of BlueSky exists right next to the side of BlueSky building things with AI and they never know because they block anyone who doesn’t agree with them The AI industry is the problem. Big tech, capitalism. Not AI

I’m not, other people are building things and seem to enjoy it. Part of why I think we need to nationalize and/or regulate it is to prevent the harm like environmental costs

Tao recently used DeepMind to crank out some discoveries in math. One is a way to optimize an operation common in linear algebra, which AI/ML/video games depend on. He basically got it to find a way to shave about 1% off GPU compute. That's incredibly significant and will have environmental impact.

And keep in mind that environmental cost of AI in the US is around 80tWh of electrical consumption. People playing video games clocks in around the same value. It's less than 2% of the grid each.

I had Opus 4.5 take my webcam stream and turn it into an RTSP feed with ONVIF discovery the other week. It took 3 hours of me asking it to fix something about the 1st go every 10-20 minutes. Just something I let spin on the side. By hand, if I was on fire, that would have taken 8 hours likely 16.

There's *nothing* being built with LLMs that's not a giant scam or house of cards. The technology is a dead end and incredibly offensive to anyone vaguely familiar with actual intelligence (which is a hugely complex topic, IQ sucks and is racist, etc, but word extruders sure ain't it, chief)

This is a lot like saying there's nothing built with cryptography that isn't a giant scam You... don't know what you're talking about, but you've convinced yourself you do. Producing plausible sentences with no actual grounding in reality. Huh.

Saying it's not useful for anything is just being silly. Even if it's only useful for natural language searching as opposed to needing to learn Google syntax. There's a reason people like using it. It needs serious regulation and guardrail but of course it's useful. Most tech has a use.
