You might be surprised to hear me say this, but I think Zohran Mamdani is the future of the Democratic Party. Just not for the reasons you probably think. He has a sharp strategic mind and the credibility to say uncomfortable truths to his own people and be heard rather than exiled.

I'm increasing skeptical bc of his Bromance w Trump. I don't know much about Mandami but everyone should be experts on Trump by now. Trump is a purely transactional exploiter of ppl. By the time Trump is saying "nice" things about someone, he has gotten what he wants or a solid agreement to get it.

I live in NYC, I think the one thing people seem to gloss over but what I think really helps his popularity is that he does the work and actually seems to enjoy doing it. After Adams and DeBlasio, who basically checked out his entire second term, it is noticeable even among republicans

He loves the city, wants every resident to love the city, and cares about filling potholes as well as instituting free child care. He's a great communicator AND wants to do the work.

A marked difference in how mayors & Governors can be kind & use their offices to give positive PR for their city and state. It does affect how citizens view where they live, how they have hope despite the troubles. Trump uses all that free PR to make a majority in the USA feel bad about life

enjoys the work and focusses on better outcomes for ordinary working people. It’s astounding how the democrats haven’t realised that not doing that resulted in Trump

As a NYer living in MA I was thinking about a Guardian article mentioning Netanyahu plans to take down Mamdani in a UN speech (smfh) then considering how blessed the city is to have ZM rather than AC!

I also live in NYC and I can’t tell a single tangible difference, despite the cult-like, never pausing chorus praising the Dear Leader, his shining glory and bottomless charisma and his abs and whatever the fuck else they decide to worship this week. I do notice obsession with photo ops though.

They don’t even hide the fact that when tea party turned GOP into a death cult they were taking notes. It’s a crew of professional arsonists larping as firefighters … When Steve Bannon said he’s a Leninist, he was closer to fact than he meant

It seems to me that it also helps that he came onto office without the huge weight of “owing” a ton of people favors. He is able to cut through all the BS and just get things done!

100% this. He’s working and doing his job, that’s why when he speaks I listen. It doesn’t sound like mush regurgitated from some vulture consultants. He has the interesting insights of someone deeply in the weeds of managing NYC.

Agreed. Adams enjoyed being among the people to be celebrated. Mamdani gets celebrated but that’s not why he’s among the people. Like Mayor Pete, he seems to enjoy the work of being the Mayor more than the title.

SO MANY of the people in government seem to not think their job has any point. It's like Ron Swanson without the heart. They're just there to collect a paycheck - and they're the policymakers! Mamdani brings a "I'm not saving anything for the swim back" energy to being mayor, and it's amazing.

^^^^^THIS! One of the things I could never understand about people like Adams was he was so DOUR. The man did not seem to like his job. I always thought "why are you here? Why do you do this job?" Mamdani seems to love what he does. I saw that video of him with a little kid in a pre-school

with the PM of Norway, and I couldn't IMAGINE Adams doing that. He seemed joyful and happy and it's infectious. Clearly Mr. Støre was smiling and enjoying meeting these little 4-5 year old kids.

Yes.This^^ is what all voters need to focus on. Is the candidate a public servant? Working for the *greater good* of the people he serves? The* greater good* has been out of the equation on both sides for too long. "Is he/she working for me?" is fine but shouldn't push out community needs.

I'm not from NY but I too have noticed that he genuinely seems to enjoy his work. He seems like such a good person and I don't say that lightly about any politician. Mamdani is incredibly refreshing in today's political hellscape. He gives me a little bit of faith that maybe things can get better.

Obviously shades of gray are involved, but there are leaders and hacks. Leaders build trust with voters so that they can be the bearer of bad news if need be. Hacks are exposed when waters get rough and we are seeing a lot of that now.

Couldn't agree more. He is a model of what they need to do. To me he doesn't seem to be very ideologically driven, just laser focused on how to solve the problems ordinary people face

The truth is, he is competent. He’s literally fixing the potholes. That should be the future regardless of party.

This is not new. Mamdani didn't re-invent the wheel. Maybe you were too young to remember when Al Gore trimmed down government, or the creation of the CFPB, or when the Biden administration went after bullshit fees. Even Obamacare was a way to make government work for the people.

Taking absolutely nothing away from Zohran Mamdani's bona fides in governance to say that being photogenic, humorous, and displaying great ease around people doesn't hurt. Image, policy, and personality -- he's the Trifecta of politicians. And besides that, he seems to be an excellent manager.

So, I do not think Mamdani is "the future of the Democratic Party." But he is very smart, and Dems should be learning from him. Smith got a lot of good stuff done for working people due to the qualities I noted above. Mamdani is the same.

A historical comp that works for Mamdani: Al Smith, the NY Governor of the 1920s known as "The Happy Warrior." Smith like Mamdani: Loved NY Loved his Job Loved people Was a great communicator Smith ran for president in 1928 and got creamed by Hoover due in part to bigotry against Irish Catholics.

One reason he can walk the walk is he doesn't have a vested interest in the status quo. When you take campaign contributions from health insurance, investment banks, and oil companies then you're not going to have much appetite to regulate these industries. Instead, you'll smile and make excuses.

Also, not being eligible as a presidential candidate is a superpower. EVERY NYC mayor dating back to Rudy has had presidential aspirations, and, thus, was compromised in some way. Mamdani is focused on responsive leadership and effective governance.

For some self-proclaimed Democrats this is like the kiss of death. "What, a Republican likes him and speaks well of him? He must be a sell out, just like when Kamala campaigned with Liz Cheney."

The most interesting and coherent story I've seen about Mamdani comes from a former Republican! Unlike virtually every other Democrat, Mamdani has an explanation why so many voters say they "hate Democrats", and what to do about it (and he's actually doing it!) Democrats who reject…

common-sense demands for more effective and efficient government remind me of the joke about "theoretical economists": in response to reports of empirical research, they say "That's all well and good in practice, but let's see how it works in theory!"

Kinzinger's point: Mamdani's credentials as a progressive are so firmly established that he can argue for what might normally be called "right-leaning" policies without being accused of selling out. See: "Only Nixon could go to China."

Figure out what people need and get it for them. Fill potholes, shovel snow, provide more affordable daycare, open stores in food deserts, and figure out how to get the filthy rich pied-a-terre crowd to pay their fair share to make whole city livable. Even the neighborhoods with (gasp!) no doormen!

I’m as far away from New York as one could be. Mamdani appears to want to get things done for people, basic things and big things. Looks like he enjoys the heck out of it, as well. More Mamdani’s less corporate owned politicians.

With all due- have you changed your party affiliation or are you just a never Trump Republican. Either way, you’re new here & your input… doesn’t matter.

Political journalists only notice politicians who are telegenic and charismatic, except when they recognize those who give off signals of what’s considered label-bending political pragmatism.

Nailed it. Dismantling government capacity is actually the tradecraft of the right (chainsaw). Why should the left (to the extent that there’s one in the US) be coy about it? He learned an important trick from Bernie: call yourself a socialist whether it’s true or not. Defangs the other side.

I think there's a second layer in the story. Mamdani's currency is goodwill, and he has amassed lots of it. How will he spend that wealth? If he really is a (democratic) socialist, there might be a few surprises in the future. Will he redistribute means of production? Housing owned by renters?

That sounds fun until the next GOP president. I'd like to forge stronger Democratic institutions that can't easily be dismantled by firing people or withholding their pay. Or, like the ICC by excluding them from having a functioning bank account.
