This nation was founded on a union, and on this Labor Day, we’re reminded that the American worker, not Washington, has led to our prosperity. As one of the few pro-union GOP congressmen at the time, I’d rather celebrate the workers than the paperwork signers who gave us off today. (Link below)

No such thing as a pro-union GOP congressman. The GOP sent all the jobs abroad. Want to raise a family on a single income? Try Germany or France. Fuck you adam. I pray you are safe, but just fuck off.

Funny Adam, IIRC you voted against the PRO-Act, the AFL-CIO gave you a 12%. You are mainstream economic conservative, an ideology that has robbed workers of trillions. Whatever your big business donors wanted, you were a reliable vote for them. But nice Labor Day message, you’ll fool some folks

If a union supports AI or supports building AI data centers, they don't have my support. Not all unions are deserving of support. Labor Day has lost its luster.

We work and work, not to make someone rich, but to provide for our families, kids & ourselves. We do the best job we can and take pride in our work. We are so immersed in our work, that when we retire, most of us feel a loss, like we're no longer contributing. (1/2)

You must have been drinking the Republican Kool-Aid Adam? People make bad decisions when they are drunk. Judging by your comments I have to wonder if your, Parents drank heavily? No true Republican is for the Unions. Now back to fiscal Conservatism? What is up with that lie Adam?

As someone who has had a bad go with mental health that has prevented me from even dreaming of working, I am beyond thankful for everyone who fought for social security so that people like me can still eat and breathe. My writing is my goal right now but volunteering is also a goal, hopefully soon.

I remember my mother telling me about her first job working in a department store in the early 1940s when she was a teenager. She often worked 10+ hours a day M-F often with no lunch breaks and another 5+ hours on Saturdays and all without OT pay, or paid holidays or really any benefits at all.

If we want to highlight working conditions organized labor was the catalyst for most of what we have to today, 40 hour week, paid vacation, sick leave etc if it is prosperity then that lies squarely on the shoulders of slavery

Weird trump like post. No one want your cars or food. The greatest achievement of the US around the world is McDonald’s and Coca Cola. Two products partly responsible for obesity in the western world. You make nothing that anyone really needs or wants.

Couldn’t agree more! From the minute Trump took office a second time Democracy in America took a step backwards! And every day almost the entire nation can feel it continues to slide! Trump doesn’t favor American Workers. He favors big business for billionaires! Inflation higher due to his tariffs!

Actually, it's the union worker who demanded Labor Day. The "paper pushers" (read politicians) never give anything to anyone without the people demanding it. Also, pushing paper and all office/brain work, is just as valid work as manual labor so stop it with your sexist macho BS!

It’s the “American Worker” that has made this Nation the greatest in the world. American ingenuity, persistence, willingness to work hard, and relentless drive to achieve is what leads to our successes. It’s NOT “make America Great Again,” it’s…..We have ALWAYS been GREAT!! Power to the People!

Adam, What are you still doing in the GOP?.. I don't get it ..They are no Longer fiscally conservative, or anything close.. just a clan of hate mongering culture warriors Dog whistling the MAGA cult and enduring DJTs Naps and stinky Diapers.. What gives Man.. You could be another Talarico or Beto..

Unions have their issues, but this country has moved way too far to the right to diminish the power of unions and the Democrats should run on strengthening them.

Great article. Appreciate your support and understanding that this country was literally built by hardworking talented people from a variety of ethnicities. THAT is what made us great.

This nation was founded on slavery, exploitation & genocide. Let’s drop the need to lean on fake past greatness, you can’t do better if you insist on building from a fucked up foundation.

I live in the South. As an RN I started at $17.00, my cousin in NY who is in Nurses Union, started at $35.00 an hour. Same degree. Unions have never caught on in the south and it shows. #LaborDay

Had a lunch with my sister her daughter who is a travel nurse and my BIL who is maga. She spoke a little about rent costs but no one mentioned the reason it's so expensive

Most if not all Southern States are anti union (RepubliCONs) and their “right to starve” laws.🤷🏽‍♀️. We have a strong Nurses union here in California. The lowest starting salary for an RN that I’ve seen is 65.00$/hr. Voters in the south need to stop voting to be racist, because they just end up poor.🤷🏽‍♀️

So long as you’re aware 85% of the American workforce works in service, retail, education, healthcare, government, etc. and only 15% work in manufacturing and resource extraction. So long as you’re aware women make up almost 50% of the unionized workforce.

America needs clean streets and better clubs. Any work that can be done from home should be. We don’t need robot slaves. We need remote operated worker drones; socialized education for free but tough drone certification.

My first job was cleaning the toilets and sweeping the halls of the Orlando Musicians Union (where my Uncle Woody played bass fiddle in a non-Dixie jazz band (I was 12). My last job was as Database Mgr for a NFP Bio Lab in Bar Harbor. It's been forever in my blood and consciousness. I was lucky.

This nation was founded on slavery and genocide.Stop romanticising our origins. Even the unions have an exclusionary history. Progress has been slow because white people like you have spent decades lying about who we really are and blaming others for the failures of capitalism to share prosperity.

This nation was also built by toil immigrants…with and without papers. Many enlisted to fight wars right off the boat, they worked at the lowest wages to build railways, highways and farms. The world was in awe…and we were proud of Statue of Liberty inscription.

My father was one of those—fresh off of a boat—but in Ontario. He never took US citizenship after moving there but was a proud Union member until the day he passed.

Thank you for the reminder of who we are as a nation. Except for the Indigenous peoples of this continent, it's original stewards of this land, immigration was a way to help families survive all kinds of persecution in their homelands. Immigrants have always been the hardest but lowest paid workers

My Scots grandfather emigrated to America in 1926, was expelled in 1929 because he tried to set up *genuine* trade unions in Chicago. He was OG Red Clydesider, veteran of the Battle of George Square. The “union” mafia in Chicago *hated* him, as he actually advocated workers rights, not extortion

I understand almost everyone doesn’t have grandparents they lived with who were 125+ years ago. Makes me feel old, but I have an incredible connection with what most folks now think of as history 🥺

Adam, shame on you for identifying with bigots, Christian fanatics and economic idiots. This didn't start with Trump and it's why you should be ashamed of yourself. Your party is directly responsible for the end of our country and you will be judged with all the Reps.

Then we offshored a lot of our manufacturing. Manufacturing and the support of same is what built and sustained the middle-classes. Manufacturing is how a single wage-earner could afford a house, everything to fill it, a car, two weeks vacation with the family every year and money for college

An excellent article. Thank you for your support and understanding. This country was built by hardworking people from diverse backgrounds, and unions help protect the middle class from exploitation and unfair working conditions.

You blew my mind at our 2017 Union Carpenter Holiday Party in Countryside Illinois. Have not seen a Republican there before or since. I specifically asked you about the problem in the White House. Thanks for honoring your commitment to the Constitution and to Labor Unions.

Former U.S. Representative Adam Kinzinger consistently voted against legislation to raise the federal minimum wage during his tenure in Congress. Raise the Wage Act (H.R. 582, 2019): Kinzinger voted No. Paycheck Fairness Act & Minimum Wage Amendments: Kinzinger routinely aligned w/ Rep. leaders, No.

Today I think about the workers in our farms who have been exploited by farm owners and now hide in the shadows fearful of ICE. They pick our food, build our houses, build our roads. They are illegally hired labor because they are unprotected, undocumented. The law breakers are the US farmers.

Why do Dem leaders say they have to be more like Republicans to win the general elections? I think they should be more like the Greatest President ever for the people, Democrat FDR! Every election past 40 years Dems move further to right in the General. When is Dems going to make GOP go Left to win?

Funny coming from a Reaganite ... or are you finally starting to see the light? On August 3, 1981, air traffic controllers all over the United States went on strike, threatening to shut down the skies and paralyze the country. But then President Reagan fired them. www.npr.org/2019/12/13/7...

npr.orgWhen Reagan Broke the Unions : Planet MoneyWhen air traffic controllers went on strike in 1981, Reagan gave them 48 hours to return. Labor would never be the same. | Subscribe to our weekly newsletter here.

So where was/is your support for an actual living wage, which where I live would be 30% higher than the minimum of $17/hr, according to MIT? I'll feel appreciated when I can pay my bills without requiring public assistance.

Gee Adam, American workers have been fucked over by corporations since the founding, and the government has typically helped corprations break unions and even kill workers. The only times American workers make progress are the rare times government helps unions. Glad to help you get it right.

Don’t forget he’s a Republican, so his idea of labor leaves out systemic exploitation. The American dream is to be paid fairly for your work so you can actually have a life. The reality now is that modern robber barons are using tax cuts to replace workers with AI, not empower them.

Theodore Roosevelt supported the labor movement as well as the rights of workers to join a union. He also supported safety laws, compensation for injured federal workers, limits on child labor, and the creation of the Department of Commerce and Labor and of women's suffrage.

Today’s unions are a microcosm of how America thinks as a whole. Only a fraction of union members vote Democratic. Even though the republican party works to weaken & eliminate unions 24/7/365. Union members bought into right wing politics full throttle. Like America does.

The real test of respecting workers is what happens when technology makes their labor less necessary. Do they inherit some of the freedom they helped create, or get thanked for their service and handed the bill?

Joe wrote “I’ve said it my entire career, the middle class built America. And unions built the middle class. To every worker who’s ever punched a clock, worked a double, or walked a line for fair wages—and to everyone who stands up for them…thank you. This country runs in large part because of you.”

Just remember it’s your Party that has been anti-Union for decades. GOP & its corporate overlords have spent billions over past couple of decades trying to destroy unions. Instead of paying their workers they decided to spend billions so they wouldn’t have to pay & provide benefits. How Ironical!

And also created the First PFA’s without any pushback, regulations or concerns..Also still allows public participation in littering,Pollution of water and air..Biodiversity Matters..

Yes. Gratitude is owed the working class people of the nation. After all, we keep them elite in expensive clothing, cars, and homes. Politicians in the same. We are literally the wheels on the bus of success. It's time we change places, folks!

LOL there’s no such thing as a “pro-union republican.” Your political party gives us union busting laws and federalist society judges who weaken labor rights. So Goddamned sick of you falsely claiming to support things you actively fought against in Congress. Fraud.

The wealthy folks do not like unions, because unions have the power to topple their control. Unions are the only thing between the middle class and slave labor. Without unions the majority including magat republicans would become slave labors and thats a fact.

Nope. He’s part of how we got here. Entitled, white, male and convinced that was all that mattered, Adam spent decades helping racist Republicans as they laid the foundation for the political hellscape we have today. His criticisms of Trump are appreciated, but I remember his voting record.

Dolly Parton logged a combined total of 115 years of union membership. Throughout her working life, the “9 to 5” singer/songwriter carried the union cards of two major unions: The American Federation of Musicians Local 257 in Nashville — for 58 years. SAG-AFTRA — for 57 years. HAPPY LABOR DAY!

American prosperity is neither a product of Washington or the rich. It is the labor of the workers that both achieves productivity AND generates commerce. The single biggest barrier to entrepreneurship is healthcare. Universal coverage would unleash the creativity of Americans.
