many things have been broken some can be mended others can be mended only with a lot of time and/or a lot of money (all that is leaving aside the will to, of course) but one thing is now absolutely beyond repair the possibility of any long-term planning with respect to the united states

because even when seeming perfectly lucid and responsible, the country has proven that it is at most four years away from staggering home piss drunk, taking a shit on the neighbor's lawn and setting fire to the bed so, science, military alliances, trade agreements, capex projects all gone
