people’s absolute inability to hold both truths, that AI presents a potentially huge risk to humanity AND that AI companies exploit fear of AI as good marketing, is incredibly frustrating.

the single weirdest argument has to be that you should feel safe because the government will somehow protect people and regulate new AI models. the government has let big tech govern themselves for decades now. that is not going to change. most leaders in our government can barely work an iPhone.

show me any evidence of big tech choosing the safety and wellbeing of people, of any attempt to regulate themselves for the public good. they have always chosen to maximize profit. they are companies, that’s what they do.

use the dangers of social media algorithms as an example. we are just finally getting some changes from Meta after massive lawsuits. there still aren’t real legislative changes or consumer protections. we once again just let meta choose what to change. and that’s after two decades of social media.

I would also like to clearly state that by “huge risk to humanity” i don’t mean like, the AI is sentient and is going to go robopocolypse on us tomorrow the systems that keep us alive are now connected to a thing that is capable of, or could soon be capable of, subverting our control.

we’ve started an arms race of LLMs. there are a lot of good and noble applications of AI, but those also shouldn’t set aside the environmental, economic, and technological risks of AI built by people who don’t care much about the fate of their fellow humans

What's the arms race? We're in a phase of gradually increasing test scores. The idea that AGI or the singularity is near is all marketing bullshit to sell more tokens. Even if some other country has a better product, we'll get an EO preventing its sale and use in the US. I don't see the urgency?
