When I met Gerry Conway, who has recently passed, he gave me the first, best advice I have received about having a creative career: "It doesn't last. You have your moment, and it is beautiful. But it doesn't last. And you have to plan for that. Emotionally and financially."

approach it like you’re a wrestler β€” you won’t last forever, so plan for what comes next while you’re still in your prime. get your realtors license, learn a trade skill (besides writing), start a business. I’m toying with going back to school myself! It’s a constant battle against reality.

My second, best advice came from Adam Warren: "No one tells you when your career in comics is over. It's not like other jobs. You don't get a pink slip. HR doesn't talk to you. Just... suddenly you have no more work. Editors who used to call you stop answering. And then you're done."
