this month i've become a nixos person. it's the first time a linux desktop has lived up to my hopes of having fun messing around on the computer. complex configuration is easy, fucking up is fine. it's joyous.

fwiw a lot of the joy i'm feeling is from finally being able to live on linux, but what's made that possible is nixos's declarativeness and centralisation tapering the mental cost of increasing complexity. as opposed to your install slowly becoming a burden

learning it is very much like rust where you eat early complexity and unfamiliarity for long term simplicity. which i think is why a lot of the same people are evangelical about it in the same way?

one of those evangelicals described it as feeling like 'endgame' for your computer. which i think is perhaps a little hopeful but i definitely feel it too.

if you're a technical person who bounced off desktop linux due to feeling that your desire for playfulness and ownership came at the cost of eternal maintenance, maybe try this. i think it's something new.
