WIRED has looked at GOP candidates for AG in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Kansas, where some have openly espoused baseless allegations about the 2020 election.
Arizona state senator Warren Petersen is tied in polls with his Democratic opponent, Kris Mayes. In 2020, Petersen was central to facilitating the bogus Cyber Ninjas audit of the 2020 vote in Maricopa County, which cost taxpayers $4 million.
In Georgia, the GOP’s nominee for AG is Brian Strickland. Strickland advocated for launching investigations into “fraudulent activities” in the 2020 election, and has also signaled his willingness to continue efforts to investigate the race.

The incumbent AG in Kansas, Kris Kobach, running for re-election in November, has been a long-time promoter of baseless election conspiracy theories. In 2020, he assisted efforts to overturn or deny the results in Texas and Michigan.
The functions of the role have been highlighted in recent months, as AGs across the country have repeatedly stood up to the Trump administration's efforts to take control of elections, seize ballots, and obtain voter rolls containing sensitive information on US citizens.
