And under that they will sell the cars even more expensive with the excuse that it's safer LOL at the price that many new cars are being sold, only if people stop buying them new, and look for a viable used option, the prices of new would eventually go down.

Why were auto cos pushing touch screens? Manufacturing costs increase with the number of parts being assembled (duh). It's cheaper to put in one touchscreen than it is to put it a dozen knobs, buttons and wiring. They try to sell it as a "sleek modern look", but it was really all about being cheap.

Partly, it was automaker thinking that Tesla's success had something to do with their (IMO awful) interiors. Looks terrible, and now we know, functions abysmally and is, unsurprisingly, given Elon's input into the process, ultimately dangerous.

My read from this is that drunk driving doesn't actually seem to affect reaction times badly at all...1.12s vs. 1s is almost barely detectable. We sure the drunk driving bar is correct?

My car is a manual transmission vehicle from 2004 with physical dials and indicators on the dashboard, no power windows, no power locks, etc. I'm desperately hoping I can completely leapfrog the touchscreen car part of this timeline. I just wish I could skip the "connected car" part also.

Finally. I've wondered how long until car manufacturers understand physical buttons are preferred. Just waiting for them to make them options to buy separately 🙄

hell yeah. how was this not blindingly obvious from the get-go. i know it's not quite in the same risk category, but... like touch screens for a stove. who the heck thought that's more efficient than knobs?!

Don't just let them walk this back and be done with it. Start putting people in prison for it. Whoever started installing touchscreens in cars needs to be PUNISHED for it. It wasn't just irresponsible it was criminally negligent from day one, and they KNEW it was.

Went with an induction stove recently, and the first one we bought was operated solely via touchscreen. Absolutely hated it and returned it. Got the exact same oven in terms of functionality, but with knobs, and it was cheaper and better.

My RAV4 Prime has plenty of buttons, which makes me happy, but I would loved if it had a play/pause button. Somehow, you can seek back and forth, raise and lower volume, and change audio sources, all from the driving wheel, but you still have to go to the screen to start and stop your media!

Glad to see this. Cars should need to be stopped when engaging touchscreens. Touchscreens demand far to much attention at the expense of watching the road. Having too many buttons can also be too much distraction from driving. For things like HVAC and audio sys navigation, knobs s/b required.
