My understanding is that these "rare" earth metals are not actually rare at all. They are just hard to extract and refine - hence the Chinese stranglehold because they have refining capacity. Having them in the ground or having rights to mine them doesn't mean much on its own.

My understanding is that China has 90%of the market because they’re willing to build refineries, which are very toxic. Not because rare earth minerals are actually rare. You can find them in your backyard. How does owning Greenland help when most Americans wouldn’t want a refinery anywhere nearby?

Isn't that the beauty of Greenland, not a lot of people around and you can destroy another ecosystem by refining there after it is colonized by the US? Hasn't exploitation of natural resources without consideration of workers rights and climate impacts always been the M.O. of colonization?

Greenland’s ice cap is losing 270 billion tons of ice per year (2002-2023) as winter snowfall cannot offset extreme summer heat. This fuels global sea level rise (0.25 inches per year)—and if it all melts, seas could rise 23 feet.

But underneath all that melting ice is something the whole world wants: the rare earth elements that make modern society—and the clean energy revolution—possible. That could soon turn Greenland, which has a population size similar to that of Casper, Wyoming, into a mining mecca.

Melting needs way time. Not 50 years. But gonna happen. Climate crisis already happens : heating, extreme weather events, dying/collapsing of the bio-geo-chemicalsphere unfolds befor our very eyes NOW, not 2100. This is not a solution, its a magic pipe dream and distracts from real solutions NOW.

Most of the known deposits are in Canada, Greenland and Africa. Trump has pissed of Canada and Greenland. Through his lack of understanding of soft power, China now has greater influence in Africa.

The absurdity of trying to frame the importance of Greenland being about sustainability / clean energy. Just a reminder of the cognitive dissonance of this: Trump is the "DRILL, BABY, DRILL!" and "LOG, BABY, LOG!" US President. It's all about access to Arctic oil.

In a civilized world, with (formerly) aligned interests in buttressing Chinese aggression and mercantilism, the U.S., EU, Canada & Mexico could have made a deal to make all of them, including Greenland, economically better off & more stable. With the new US aggression, that is off the table

So called "clean" energy doesn't exist. For every source there's pollution involved. The extraction of rare earths is environmentally worse than drilling for oil. Shame on Wired for such gaslighting. This is not about China either. It's about greed. Say it like it is.
