Today, we're announcing plans to make VS Code an open source AI editor. We believe AI development should stay true to VS Code's core principles: open, collaborative, and community-driven. Let's build the future of software development together. aka.ms/open-source-...

Simulation Tests (S Tests) sounds really interesting, will there be something of that made opensource? I can understand not having certain test cases being available, if there is confidential data in there but having the test framework available would be really cool to learn from.

Hi, Neovim.. but it's a bit of a learning curve, took me a few months to become productive again So it really depends on what your pain threshold is, or if MS ticked you off enough😂 For out of the box, I've heard good things about Zed, if you're on LInux or Mac.. no Win support yet unfortunately

Cool stuff! Is there any sort of feature being planned where the inline autocomplete can get _hinted_ but not explicitly hijacking the tab complete and relayouting the entire editor? I'm fine with being able to invoke it with a hotkey to expand the suggestions.

It's currently extremely difficult to rely on regular intellisense and this is having negative effects for libraries we're shipping to our customers. Autocomplete from carefully crafted APIs and TS types is being replaced by Copilot hallucinations.

At least changing the default behaviour would be nice. In no scenario should Copilot suggestions override other suggestions, and both the dev team and our clients are increasingly relying on manually triggering intellisense with ctrl+space, if they are even aware of that option.

Hi, advocate on the VS Code team here, and thanks so much for this feedback! This is something the team is very much aware of and is currently brainstorming ideas of how to solve the intellisense/completions conflict, including the potential of adding a setting to help with this.

> Today, we're announcing plans to make VS Code an open source AI editor. this is what I'm referring to. Also, as a fellow Developer Advocate, this isn't a good way to manage critical feedback - it addresses a point orthogonal to the one I was making.

My reply was to provide a counterpoint to "AI brainrot overtaking the team", because, even though VS Code is announcing plans to become an open source AI editor, we still will make a concerted effort to have an even AI/non-AI split. Happy to hear specific thoughts on how we can do better!

And making "VS Code an open source AI editor" is obviously what we all want because we all just love how Copilot has taken over all the development focus over there. Can't believe you killed off vscode, but that just goes to show how naive I still am 😔

Good questions - the GitHub Copilot backend service will remain closed source, and models used by GitHub Copilot are licensed separately (and are mostly third party) so there will be no change there. It is specificially the VS Code extension source code that is being open sourced

Lol. Sucks. Ai is bullshit and you just have to shove it into all your products now as you make no money on your shit investment. Disgusting how you have no care for exploiting devs for your own benefit.

Quite to to the contrary, I think Copilot is a very good and non-invasive way to monetize VSCode, which ensures sustained development of this product while keeping the best all-round IDE out there completely free for anyone with no strings attached.
