Hired Guns in 256 colours, combined with AGA lighting system, smooth tile-based movement and surface-dependent footstep sounds, among other things, running natively on PC. All of these are optional. More details, including a list of changes, below 🧵🔽 #retrogaming #amiga #dosgaming #rpg #crpg

This began as a fun personal project - I wanted to run the best version of Hired Guns possible, as I've never played it before, and learn how the original developers did their assembly magic (map loading and all that).

I got hooked on playing around with clankers for this, since I never intended to release the results and wanted to use the process for learning purposes. More than 100 builds later, after showing the build to two friends, they've told me I should make this version available.

I first wanted to deslopify the code, but I won't have time for that until some time next year, and I might lose interest till then. Plus, maybe someone else, more experienced with this kind of projects, will step in to properly clean and maintain this. Some changes listed below.

Some features, can be toggled: - smooth tile-based movement - AGA sounds & music (from the unreleased AGA version available online) - surface-dependent footstep sounds - DOS palette available (256 colours) + AGA + ECS - screenshakes (shots, hits) - customisable controls

The goal was to take all the best parts from different versions, such as more colours, best music & sounds and such, and add some enhancements, like the smooth camera (while retaining the tile-based movement) without losing the retro charm. You can also play the game in its original Amiga glory.

Data files would not be included, only the engine (so players would have to provide data). If the colours in the video look wrong, no worries - they can be adjusted in the config. Any interest? Should I make this available on github at some point?

Pardon my French but f*** yes ! I got sweet memories of this game. What would be incredible is actually a way to implement a distant multiplayer capability so that the game could be played cooperatively (which is what makes this game invaluable) more easily.
