To avoid the flatMap(identity) I guess you could do something akin to: gather(mapWithIndex(Pair::of)) .flatMap(p -> Arrays.stream(p.right().split(””)).gather(mapWithIndex((x, value) -> Pair.of(x, p.left()))).collect(…)
