To DBAs: Have you ever granted INSERT/UPDATE but not DELETE? I would like to hear your reasoning behind that decision. I am wondering if the granularity is ever used or even needed. Would a readonly/readwrite pair be just as good in your production? #DBA #SQL

I haven't, but I have had a case where it would have been useful and probably should have. An accounting system for charitable donations. For audit purposes, donations could be added but never deleted. Changes would create a new record, but the old record would still be retained.

so UPDATE would keep the old record but DELETE wouldn't?

Update wasn’t used. A new record was created referencing the previous record. I guess update wasn’t required either. I’m going back decades in my memory here… it was a volunteer project and I’ve never been a full time dba. Mistakes were made 🤣
