Welcome to v3 of the Blue Sky Game Dev orientation 🧵! Let's get you started with the basics of bsky, finding other devs, and posting about your games! Btw, this is based on the artist orientation thread from @purlane.ink; make sure to check it out if you’re also on the art side of game dev!

Welcome to the Bluesky artist orientation 🧵! This will get you started on the basics of how this network works, how to connect with other artists, and how to get your art seen. If you’re a furry, I also highly recommend checking out @buttplug.engineer's furry orientation thread below:

First things first, you need to write up your intro skeet! Don’t bother making it a reply in any of the intro threads, tho… we’ll get to that in a bit. Include the #GameDev tag to ensure your intro shows up in the game dev feed. 😍

With your intro skeet done, go check out the 2 main intro threads. Shop around for friends to follow while you’re there, and don’t forget to drop a link to your own intro skeet in the replies. ❤️ bsky.app/profile/trez... bsky.app/profile/rami...

Hey, let’s get an intros thread for all of the game devs here! Tell us about yourself, your studio, and/or your current projects! 👾♥️

Next, let’s talk about custom feeds. They’re a whole big topic all on their own, so I wrote up a thread about them. TL;DR - Custom feeds are community-managed timelines that you can subscribe to.

WHAT IS A CUSTOM FEED‽ A lot of people are still confused about it, so I figured a thread might help clarify. On other social platforms, algorithms are governed by the platform owners. On bsky, algorithms are created, owned, and managed by the community (gimme that means of production bebe).

Now... what feeds should you follow to get into the game dev community? I wrote up a thread about that, too!

It's time to update the living list of all the game dev feeds! Bookmark this thread and check back every once in a while to see if any more have been added! 🧵

Finally, follow and engage with other game devs! Blue Sky is a very different platform than Twitter. It’s not impossible to build an audience, but we’ve had more success with building communities. The game dev community has been growing and thriving and it’s been amazing to be a part of it all. ❤️

Some parting thoughts before we dive into the Q&A: If find posts you think others should see, make sure to reskeet! Most feeds don’t use likes as a heuristic, so reskeets are the best tool we have for boosting content.

Also, keep in mind that engagement bait and influencer-style skeets aren't nearly as effective here as they are on Twitter; custom feeds make it too easy to tune your own experience for that shit! Instead, focus on posting interesting stuff and building your community! 😁

Q&A time! 1️⃣ Why should I use bsky over other platforms? If you’re a game dev looking for an escape from the bird site, I think this is the place. Our community has been thriving here. It’s just a pleasant experience, and helpful feedback is the norm. 🥰
